There are four levels in a any rainforest; the emergent, the canopy, the understory and the ground layer. Each layer has unique plants and animals. In fact 70-90% of the life in the forest lives in the trees.
The emergent refers to the plants that have grown over the top of the majority of trees. These plants can soar 20-100 feet above the rest of the canopy. Not many animals live with in this part.
The canopy lies just bellow the over story. Most of the 70-90% that live in the tress hide out here. The canopy is refered to as the dense ceiling of the rainforest. When flying over the rainforest the canopy looks like it goes on forever with no breaks. However the branches rarely touche. The true reason for this is unsure but scientists believe the reason for this is to prevent diseases and tree eating insects to spread.
The understory consists of wider spaced trees, smaller plants species and individuals that form a broken layer.
The ground layer is made up of trunks of trees, fungus, and low growing vegetation. This part of the forest is clear compared to the rest of the forest. Little to no rain reach this point of the forest. Most people think you need an axe or manchet to get through the forest floor however the reality is you would be better off if you brought a flash light.
